Australian Capital Territory or ACT observes its own public holidays in addition to the ones celebrated nationally. There are 12 public holidays celebrated in the Australian Capital Territory every year.
When a public holiday falls on Saturday on Sunday, the following work day will be considered as a substitute holiday. A substitute holiday is also applicable to a public holiday which falls coincided with another public holiday. As an illustration, Anzac Day and Easter Monday fall on the same date in 2011. Thus, the government proclaimed a substitute holiday to have a steady number of public holidays.
During public holidays in ACT, most employees from private and public sectors are given days off with regular amount of payment. Those who are required to work during these public holidays may receive a penalty rate of payment based on their contracts of employment.
